Ex-soldier found dying with MAGGOTS crawling from his legs after police refused to check

A DYING ex-soldier was found slumped on his sofa with MAGGOTS crawling out of his legs, despite police being called TWICE to check on him. Grieving sister Carole Mitchell was left stunned after finding her brother Peter Mitchell, 64, covered in the flesh-eating creatures and surrounded by blood and excrement, last Wednesday.
The former squaddie was rushed to hospital, but died on Monday and an inquest is to be held to determine the cause of his death.

But Miss Mitchell has slammed Lancashire Police for failing to complete welfare checks on her brother despite two separate requests.

Miss Mitchell, who has arachnoiditis - a debilitating spinal condition - says she rang the non-emergency police number 101 to request a welfare check on Tuesday, but was asked by the operator why she couldn't check on him herself.

But Miss Mitchell, who lives in North Yorkshire, said it was due to her disability and a two-hour drive to get there.

She was then told to check with the local hospitals instead, but was refused help because she could not prove she was a relative.

Miss Mitchell again called 101 the following day and was transferred to another number, which rang unanswered for eight minutes.
