As Coach Edwin Okon prepares to pitch his girls against Mexico on Thursday, he must ensure that his players especially, four-goal heroine,Francisca Ordega, Desire Oparanozie and Esther Sunday continue to shoot on sight.
Against the Mexicans, they need to play as many shots as possible as goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago is especially suspect from long range shots as evidenced in the three goals conceded against Japan in their opening game.
The physical Nigerian team must alsouse their superior size against the Mexicans who were beaten 4-1 in their opening match against Japan. They rallied to post impressive wins over Switzerland and then the 4-0 rout over New Zealand that qualifiedthem to face Nigeria.
“Nothing has changed between 2010and 2012, except that all the girls who were already there have worked hard and improved,” said coach Okon to Fifa.com .
The Falconets scored seven goals in the group stage and conceded one in the match against Brazil, a match in which they did not play too impressively. Now they are at a stagewhere mistakes will be doubly punished.
“We always come to the World Cup to win it. We were close in 2010.
“We still aim for the final, and this time, we just hope that the result will be different,” Okon added.
