A MIDDLE-aged robbery suspect recently stunned police detectives in Lagos when he openly confessed that he had no other profession than robbery. Fair-complexioned Maxwell Unachukwu who sang like canary to the bewildered anti-robbery policemen later gave information that led to the arrest of five of his partners in crime. He was arrested after the gang attacked one Durigbo Nneka along the highbrow Allen Avenue in Ikeja.
Crime Alert gathered that on the fateful day, the young lady was leisurely going to work. On reaching a point at Allen Avenue where she wanted to board a bus, a young man appeared from nowhere and pointed a gun at her. Before sheknew what was happening, her attacker dispossessed her of her hand bag and threatened toshoot her if she raised alarm. After the incident, the victim reported her plight to the police at Ikeja and a team of crack detectives attached to the special anti-robbery squad, SARS, were detailed to investigate the case.
It was learnt that the detectives swung into action and ended up arresting the leader of the gangidentified as Maxwell Unachukwu. When he was quizzed, he opened up by givinginformation that led to the arrest of other members of his gang. Those arrested were Uchenna Irem, Shedrach Ugorji, Chukwuma Uzoma, Sunday Abidakun and Idowu. In the course of investigation, three Toyota coaster buses with number plates XV 858 GGE, EA 823 GGE, XR98KSG were recovered at Egba and Odo-Eri in Delta and Kogi states.

The prime suspect, Unachukwu, who pleaded guilty to the crime confessed attacking Nneka anddispossessing her of her hand bag at gun point while threatening to shoot her if she screamed. He also confessed to the series of robbery attacks atMile 2 overhead bridge, Volkswagen bus stop along Badagry expressway and other places within Lagos.
Attributing his involvement in robbery to the handiwork of the devil, he stated unequivocally that, he has been using robbery as a source of lively hood. “Please forgive me,it is the handiwork of Satan, I am jobless and this is my only source of lively hood,” he pleaded.
Lagos State police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ngozi Braide, told Crime Alert that efforts are being intensified to arrest two remaining membersof the gang whom she said are at large. She also advised Lagosians to be vigilant and also help the police to fight crime by giving useful information to the police.
