Ilasamaja, Lagos and its environs became a Mecca of sorts on Friday morning as residents trooped out to the police station in the area to see the bodies of four robbery suspects killed in a duel with the police earlier on the same day.
SATURDAY PUNCH gathered that seven robbers had attacked a residential building on Ibadan Street, Ilasamaja, at about 2 am on Friday.
The robbers had already gained access into the building and had begun operation when a distress call was placed to the Ilasamaja Police Division.
The anti-robbery division of the station was said to have swung into action and arrived at the scene where the residents of the building had been held hostage.
In the ensuing shootout with the robbers, four members of the gang were killed, while three escaped with bullet wounds.
Jubilant residents trooped to the police station on the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway to look at the corpses ofthe robbers, who were said to have been terrorising the community for some time.
To the surprise of the residents, the dead robbers turned out to be persons known to the community.
Three of them were alleged to be members of the Baale chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, while one was said to be a member of the neighbourhood Oodua Peoples Congress.
