Burundi's Pierre Nkurunziza warns against vengeance

<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Pierre Nkurunziza (21 July 2015)" src="http://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/660/cpsprodpb/16DF3/production/_84638639_84395581.jpg" /></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /><br />Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza has warned against vengeance following the assassination of a senior general.<br />"Vengeance can wipe out an entire generation," he said, in an address to the nation on Sunday, urging calm.<br />A presidential spokesman told the BBC it was too early to blame anyone for the killing of Gen Adolphe Nshimirimana in a rocket and gun attack on his car.<br />Mr Nkurunziza won a third term last month, amid deadly protests over his decision to run for office again.<br /><a name="more"></a>Opponents argued this contravened the constitution and there was a failed coup attempt in May.<br />"Adolphe Nshimirimana was the regime's number two, not officially, but unofficially. This assassination is a very serious blow to Burundi's government," International Crisis Group analyst Thierry Vircoulon told BBC Afrique.<br />The attackers reportedly targeted the general's car with machine guns and rocket launchers in the Kamenge district of the capital Bujumbura.<br />Presidential spokesperson Gerve Abehayo rejected suggestions that the attack could have been carried out by elements within Burundi's own security apparatus, after witnesses reported four men in military uniform spraying the general's car with bullets.<br />"The government is not losing support... the army remains strong and united... one general was killed, but this does not mean the whole military has been wiped out of this country," he told the BBC's Newsday programme.</span><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Refugees from Burundi who fled the ongoing violence and political tension and aid workers sail on a boat to reach MV Liemba, a ship freighted by the United Nations at the Kagunga landing base on the shores of Lake Tanganyika near Kigoma in Tanzania" src="http://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/395B/production/_84638641_027447975-1.jpg" /></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>President Nkurunziza has called for an investigation into the general's killing to be concluded within a week.<br />The African Union, European Union and the US have all condemned the attack, with AU chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma describing it as a "barbaric act that is likely to further destabilise the country".<br />Prominent Burundian journalist Esdras Ndikumana, who works for AFP news agency and Radio France Internationale (RFI), says he was detained by intelligence officers and badly beaten after trying to take photos at the scene of the attack.<br />More than 70 people have been killed since the unrest began in April, and 180,000 have fled the country, according to the UN refugee agency.<br />Mr Nkurunziza came to power in 2005, after 300,000 were killed in a 12-year conflict between ethnic Hutus and Tutsis.</span><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">BBC</span></div>

Today In History: Nautilus travels under North Pole

<div style="text-align: center;"><img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/USS_Nautilus_SSN-571_-_0857101.jpg" /></div><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /><br />On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.<br /><br /><a name="more"></a>The USS Nautilus was constructed under the direction of U.S. Navy Captain Hyman G. Rickover, a brilliant Russian-born engineer who joined the U.S. atomic program in 1946. In 1947, he was put in charge of the navy’s nuclear-propulsion program and began work on an atomic submarine. Regarded as a fanatic by his detractors, Rickover succeeded in developing and delivering the world’s first nuclear submarine years ahead of schedule. In 1952, the Nautilus’keel was laid by President Harry S. Truman, and on January 21, 1954, first lady Mamie Eisenhower broke a bottle of champagne across its bow as it was launched into the Thames River at Groton, Connecticut. Commissioned on September 30, 1954, it first ran under nuclear power on the morning of January 17, 1955.<br /><br />Much larger than the diesel-electric submarines that preceded it, theNautilus stretched 319 feet and displaced 3,180 tons. It could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel. The uranium-powered nuclear reactor produced steam that drove propulsion turbines, allowing the Nautilus to travel underwater at speeds in excess of 20 knots.<br /><br />In its early years of service, the USS Nautilus broke numerous submarine travel records and on July 23, 1958, departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on “Operation Northwest Passage”–the first crossing of the North Pole by submarine. There were 116 men aboard for this historic voyage, including Commander William R. Anderson, 111 officers and crew, and four civilian scientists. The Nautilus steamed north through the Bering Strait and did not surface until it reached Point Barrow, Alaska, in the Beaufort Sea, though it did send its periscope up once off the Diomedes Islands, between Alaska and Siberia, to check for radar bearings. On August 1, the submarine left the north coast of Alaska and dove under the Arctic ice cap.<br /><br />The submarine traveled at a depth of about 500 feet, and the ice cap above varied in thickness from 10 to 50 feet, with the midnight sun of the Arctic shining in varying degrees through the blue ice. At 11:15 p.m. EDT on August 3, 1958, Commander Anderson announced to his crew: “For the world, our country, and the Navy–the North Pole.” The Nautilus passed under the geographic North Pole without pausing. The submarine next surfaced in the Greenland Sea between Spitzbergen and Greenland on August 5. Two days later, it ended its historic journey at Iceland. For the command during the historic journey, President Dwight D. Eisenhower decorated Anderson with the Legion of Merit.<br /><br />After a career spanning 25 years and almost 500,000 miles steamed, the Nautilus was decommissioned on March 3, 1980. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982, the world’s first nuclear submarine went on exhibit in 1986 as the Historic Ship Nautilus at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut.</span>

Both were said to have stab wounds and gunshot wounds.<br />Officials said the two were last seen on July 18, though Jessie did not report them missing until this Saturday.<br /><br />Jessie's story seemed suspicious from the start.<br />First, Cheyanne allegedly told police on Saturday that Mark Weekly absconded to Georgia with his granddaughter, Meredith Jessie. A text from Weekly’s phone said he had a year left to live and wanted to spend his remaining time with his granddaughter. Then, cops say, Cheyanne admitted to having an argument with her father. After a while, she allegedly admitted that verbal argument became a physical altercation.<br />“And things don’t smell right,” Sheriff Grady Judd said Sunday. “Literally. They don’t smell right. She allegedly sent messages from her father’s phone detailing the Georgia story in an effort to stave off suspicion.<br /><br />The early theory of the motive is that Cheyanne didn’t want her daughter to get in the way of a new relationship, Judd said.<br /><br />Cheyanne claims self-defense, according to police. She allegedly said that she dropped her daughter off at Weekly’s house on July 18 when the two got into a fight. During the fight, her father tried to stab her and, due to martial arts training she says she had, she was able to get the knife away. During the scuffle, cops say, Cheyanne said she accidently stabbed her daughter.<br />“None of the evidence supports any of this,” said Judd, who detailed a crime scene that had stab and slash marks on a couch, “blood-soaked furniture” and blood on the floor that had been covered with a rug.<br /><br />Cheyanne allegedly made statements to her boyfriend asking if a body would fit in a tote bag, according to Judd. On another occasion she’s said to have asked how long it would take for a body to decompose.<br /><br />During the interim between the altercation and the discovery of the bodies, Cheyanne called friends and relatives to confirm that Meredith and Weekly were “in great shape,” according to Judd.<br /><br />“This is the face and these are the eyes of a cold-blooded murderer,” Judd said, holding up a picture of Cheyanne, who he said had just one prior arrest, for an alleged knife assault against a previous boyfriend. Cheyanne is scheduled to appear in court on Monday and has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.<br /><br />Judd was clearly emotional during the nearly half hour press conference.<br />“It’s hard for anyone to deal with that,” said Judd, who then held up a picture of Cheyanne again. “Except her.”
